Carnival Strippers

From 1972-1975 Susan Meiselas spent her summers photographing and interviewing women who performed striptease for small time carnivals. From town to town she portrayed the dancers on stage and off, photographing their public performances as well as their private lives. She taped interviews with the dancers, boyfriends, show managers and paying customers. First published in 1976, produced during the early years of the women's movement, attitudes have changed, but the power of these pictures remain the same.
