Course Description

By deeply conceptualizing every aspect of her appearance and performance, Lady Gaga has brought the idea of creative and performative self-expression to the forefront of popular culture. She challenges her audience to openly embrace their inner selves and to not be afraid to transform and often recreate one`s identity. This class, inspired by Gaga, and is for any student who wishes to develop an approach to expressing one`s identity in a performative and visual way through photography. As an initial frame of reference, this course explores the imagery of Lady Gaga, her approach to artistry, and the ways in which she has challenged and confronted societal boundaries for self-expression. By analyzing Gaga`s approach, we explore conceptual and technical approaches to photographic self-expression. In-class and out-ofclass assignments include emulating or using one of Gaga`s projects as a source of inspiration as well as individual projects focused on one`s personal interest in her work. Weekly class discussions and critiques provide support and encouragement. Students will come out of this class having explored their own ways of selfexpression and with a concept-driven, individual, photography project about identity. prerequisite: Photo I or portfolio review NEW
