Course Description

This course explores the role that documentary photography plays in promoting social change, particularly in the realm of human rights, and how documentary photographers and nonprofit organizations use photography to raise awareness about global social issues. Through lectures, critiques, and assignments, aspiring photographers acquire the tools and skills to research, develop, edit, and create strong photo essays. Students learn how to launch a photo documentary and identify a target audience, the necessary steps to funding a project, and ways to approach nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Class time includes looking at the work of contemporary photographers who have changed our understanding of human and environmental conflicts. Guest speakers include the director of communication of the International Rescue Committee. new prerequisite: Photo I or portfolio review
