Travel WorkshopsFrom Africa to South America - A Passage from Casablanca to Rio de Janeiro
Course DescriptionThe biggest challenge of travel photography is to bring back evocative, telling images while working on the move and with severe time limits. Today's "smart" cameras are making this challenge easier, provided we know how to make our technological gear do our bidding. Still, sophisticated equipment is no guarantee of memorable travel images. Our goals in this workshop are 1) to help you gain technical mastery of your cameras and other equipment and 2) to develop the vision to interpret your travel experiences in sensitive, bold, expressive new ways. We will achieve these goals through lectures and demonstrations; specific assignments for each shore excursion; critiques and discussions; individual consultations and lots of personal attention, on location and on board ship. Those shooting digitally will have the opportunity to download their images for immediate editing, review, and comment. These critique sessions will give you invaluable feedback from Allen and the class. Allen will evaluate each participant's progress, suggest specific technical and aesthetic improvements, and explore the direction the photographer should take. There is an area on the ship set aside for our workshop, complete with a digital projector, and with tables and power for those who have laptop computers (Mac or PC). During days at sea, as appropriate, Allen will offer instruction in aspects of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Lightroom, for editing, organizing, image enhancement and image manipulation. If you are familiar with some other software, you are, of course, welcome to use that. This intensive workshop is uniquely designed to increase visual awareness, stimulate insight and develop each photographer's personal vision. The photo assignments will encourage you to plan your time, be open to new experiences and learn to think like professionals on a travel photography shoot. Each student should leave with a portfolio of images of professional quality. By stretching and refining our powers of seeing and by bringing to our travel photography a sense of clarity, adventure and newness, this workshop will move you beyond sightseeing toward genuine exploration.
