Course Description

This workshop expands notions of what the portrait can be. While it recognizes traditional portraiture as a starting point from which to build images of imagination, strong visual interest, and psychology, the usual and mundane ways of portrait making are left behind. Students stretch, risk, stumble, grow, and hopefully achieve new insights about themselves as well as those photographed. Technique is stressed, not for its own sake, but always in the service of a final portrait that is unique. The workshop explores a combination of techniques that include digital manipulations, paper negatives, multiple and sandwich printing, multiple exposures, collage, projections, photograms, toning, light modifiers, unusual perspectives, and diptychs and triptychs. Attention is given to the final presentation of the photograph as a way to extend the portrait. The course includes a shooting assignment, critiques, lectures, and demonstrations that help each student reach new levels of creativity. A basic understanding of blackand- white and/or color printing procedures is helpful. prerequisite: Photo II or portfolio review
