Course Description

Photographers make decisions when taking pictures, so all
photographs are expressive to some degree. But how can
photographers introduce emotional content in documentary
photography without losing sight of the story? How can
content and form, information and emotion be balanced?
In a world overflowing with sensational images, how can we
produce meaningful documentary work? In this workshop,
students will learn to build coherent, intelligent, and emotive
work and to trust instinct and impulse, to write stories as
they have experienced them. Students will learn to identify
the consistencies of theme and structure in their work.
Classes will include discussions on researching, shooting,
editing and sequencing, critiques, and assignments.
